April Fools' Fun: College Trivia & a Chance to Win!

Published about 1 month ago • 2 min read

Hi, Reader!

College admissions is some serious stuff, no doubt. And I know I’m preaching to the choir when I tell you it can sometimes be stressful and feel overwhelming.

So this week, let’s have a little fun with college admissions with some not-so-serious trivia.

Think of it as an April Fool’s joke without any of the “Did I really just fall for that?” stress.

Ready? Let’s go!

Did you know that:

  • “Alumni” comes from the Latin “alumnus,” meaning “foster son.”
  • The University of Michigan—Ann Arbor has a Squirrel Club with over 400 members.
  • Brown University was originally named The College of Rhode Island … until Nicholas Brown donated $5,000 to the school in 1804.
  • The unofficial mascot of Dartmouth College is Keggy the Keg, while UC Santa Cruz has Sammy the Banana Slug.
  • Each May at Carleton College, students gather for a friendly game of softball — with one inning for each year in the school’s history. (FYI: The college was founded in 1866.)
  • Rice University has a puppy room dedicated to pet therapy for students during finals.

Now let me leave you with a trivia question: On what campus was beer pong alleged to have been started?

Reply with your answer. I’ll pick one correct response to win the book “My College Journal” by The Princeton Review. This guided journal includes:

  • Reflective prompts designed to help you tell your story on college applications
  • Engaging activities to help you define and organize your thoughts
  • Comprehensive worksheets to record and organize your test scores, essay ideas, and more
  • Write-in college profile sections to help you compare and contrast schools and narrow down your list

I'll share the winner (and the answer) next week.

It’s hard to believe it’s April, but here we are. Summer is just around the corner. Who’s ready?

Happy Writing!

Julia

What I'm Watching

I just finished the Netflix series “One Day” and am debating watching the movie. It was an emotional rollercoaster. Have you watched it?

Hi, Reader! Today I want to do a little 3-2-1 game with you so we can get to know each other a little better. Ready? Let's go! 3 things going well in life right now: I'm getting ready to head down to Miami to pack up my daughter to bring her home for the summer. Thank goodness for CollegeBoxes. They pick up her moving boxes right from her dorm room and then deliver them to our front door. (Then they do the same thing in reverse in the fall.) Definitely simplifies moving — check them out to...

Hi, Reader! May (and summer vacation!) are just around the corner, and things are ramping up. Both of my kids are prepping for finals, and my essay students are gearing up for AP exams, followed quickly by their own finals. I know that doesn't leave a lot of time for college planning right now. And that's OK. But once you get a little breathing time, here are some things you can consider doing to get the most out of your summer. 9th-graders Build an awesome summer reading list: Start with...

Hi, Reader! It’s April 16, and do you know what that means? Either you were on the ball and filed your taxes yesterday and you’re breathing a sigh of relief today, or you’re like my household and didn’t quite get everything done like we’d hoped and had to file an extension. The years we have to file an extension in my household drive me crazy. We get the materials in January, and I try to get most of it uploaded. But then time gets away from us and BOOM. We’re up against a deadline and...
