⏰ Time to Plan for a Successful Year End + Summer!

Published 15 days ago • 3 min read

Hi, Reader!

May (and summer vacation!) are just around the corner, and things are ramping up. Both of my kids are prepping for finals, and my essay students are gearing up for AP exams, followed quickly by their own finals.

I know that doesn't leave a lot of time for college planning right now. And that's OK. But once you get a little breathing time, here are some things you can consider doing to get the most out of your summer.

  • Continue applying for scholarships. Check in with your counselor to see whether there are any local scholarships you might have missed.
  • Appeal financial aid: Read up on what to do if your financial aid offer doesn’t line up with your budget. And make sure to listen to this podcast before writing an appeal letter.
  • Make your final college choice: It’s decision time. You need to enroll and submit a deposit by May 1st (or a few days after, depending on the school).

There’s a lot to do, but the good news is that there’s also plenty of time in which to do it all … as long as you make a plan.

Oh, I started brainstorming my own personal statement last week in a College Essay Guy workshop I'm participating in, and I just wrote my "crappy first draft" for one of my topics. Want to follow along and see what it looks like to brainstorm, write, and edit a personal statement in three weeks? Check out my live blog here! I've got a long way to go until the final product, but I want to show you that it doesn't have to be as hard as you may think it is!

Have a great rest of April, and I’ll see you next week!

Happy Writing!

Julia

What I'm Working on

I just published this post on the SRAR/SSAR. Not sure what it is? Check out the blog, where I explain what it is and who needs to complete it.

What I'm Recommending

Consider making a testing plan, if you don’t already have one in place. With more schools making last-minute decisions to restore test requirements as part of admission, you don’t want to get left out in the cold.

What I'm Reading

I’ve been binging “Chicago Med” lately, but my daughter is encouraging me to check out “Baby Reindeer.” What are your recommendations?

Hi, Reader! Today I want to do a little 3-2-1 game with you so we can get to know each other a little better. Ready? Let's go! 3 things going well in life right now: I'm getting ready to head down to Miami to pack up my daughter to bring her home for the summer. Thank goodness for CollegeBoxes. They pick up her moving boxes right from her dorm room and then deliver them to our front door. (Then they do the same thing in reverse in the fall.) Definitely simplifies moving — check them out to...

Hi, Reader! It’s April 16, and do you know what that means? Either you were on the ball and filed your taxes yesterday and you’re breathing a sigh of relief today, or you’re like my household and didn’t quite get everything done like we’d hoped and had to file an extension. The years we have to file an extension in my household drive me crazy. We get the materials in January, and I try to get most of it uploaded. But then time gets away from us and BOOM. We’re up against a deadline and...

Hi, Reader! Happy Day-After-the-Eclipse Day! It was a gloomy (an understatement!) day here in Texas yesterday, and I caught the very beginning of the eclipse … and then we were in thunderstorms for the rest of it. I was bummed, but you can’t fight Mother Nature, can you? And that leaves me with a package of 10 new eclipse glasses and nothing to look at. So what does one do with them? I posted this on my Facebook page yesterday, but I thought it was worth repeating here (in case you're not...
