Hi, Reader!

It’s April 16, and do you know what that means?

Either you were on the ball and filed your taxes yesterday and you’re breathing a sigh of relief today, or you’re like my household and didn’t quite get everything done like we’d hoped and had to file an extension.

The years we have to file an extension in my household drive me crazy. We get the materials in January, and I try to get most of it uploaded. But then time gets away from us and BOOM. We’re up against a deadline and scrambling, and my husband can’t give it the time it needs to check my work and get into some of the tax work I don’t fully understand. The result? Extensions are filed. Penalties are involved. And we promise "Never again!"

Can you see where I might be going with this?

Students who are applying to colleges this summer know already they’ve got some pretty big deadlines looming. And they know some of what they need to do to meet those deadlines.

APs and finals are around the corner, so it’s study time to potentially earn college credit and keep that GPA healthy. ACTs and SATs are being required again for more schools, so you might be doing some test prep. The Common App has confirmed its prompts, so you could even start doing some brainstorming if you have an hour to spare.

Of course, there are still some wildcards that we won’t yet know about for a while, like supplemental essay prompts.

But we do know this: Unlike with taxes, there are no extensions with college applications.

So why not get started today with mapping out your plan for the next several months to make sure you hit those deadlines with zero stress?

One way you might consider getting a jump start on essay writing is by joining the College Essay Guy’s “How to Write a Personal Statement Course,” which runs live June 18-July 9 (and also has an on-demand component). (You can even use code JULIA10 for 10% off.

As many of you know, I’m an essay coach and reviewer for the College Essay Guy – that’s how much I love and trust his materials.

Actually, I’m even participating in a workshop starting this week in which essay coaches will go through an abbreviated version of his program and write our own personal statements.

If you like, follow my behind-the-scenes documentation of everything I’m doing, from brainstorming to drafting. I have no idea yet what I’m going to write my essay on (sound familiar?) and you can see in this Google Doc how my own essay-writing journey evolves. My hope is that it makes you feel more confident about the writing journey you’ll soon be on.

Whether you’re starting your college application prep work now or when school gets out, definitely make sure you have your deadlines in sight and give yourself plenty of time to get things done.

Happy Writing!

Julia

Hi, Reader! Today I want to do a little 3-2-1 game with you so we can get to know each other a little better. Ready? Let's go! 3 things going well in life right now: I'm getting ready to head down to Miami to pack up my daughter to bring her home for the summer. Thank goodness for CollegeBoxes. They pick up her moving boxes right from her dorm room and then deliver them to our front door. (Then they do the same thing in reverse in the fall.) Definitely simplifies moving — check them out to...

Hi, Reader! May (and summer vacation!) are just around the corner, and things are ramping up. Both of my kids are prepping for finals, and my essay students are gearing up for AP exams, followed quickly by their own finals. I know that doesn't leave a lot of time for college planning right now. And that's OK. But once you get a little breathing time, here are some things you can consider doing to get the most out of your summer. 9th-graders Build an awesome summer reading list: Start with...

Hi, Reader! Happy Day-After-the-Eclipse Day! It was a gloomy (an understatement!) day here in Texas yesterday, and I caught the very beginning of the eclipse … and then we were in thunderstorms for the rest of it. I was bummed, but you can’t fight Mother Nature, can you? And that leaves me with a package of 10 new eclipse glasses and nothing to look at. So what does one do with them? I posted this on my Facebook page yesterday, but I thought it was worth repeating here (in case you're not...
